Kia distributor counts on new models and better economy

KUALA LUMPUR: Naza Kia Sdn Bhd, the official distributor of Kia vehicles in the country, expects a 64% growth in sales to 18,000 units in 2011, boosted by new model launches and a better economy seen next year.

Chief operating officer Datuk Syed Abdull Hafiz Syed Abu Bakar said he expected the momentum in total industry volume (TIV) in Malaysia this year, which is headed for a record high of 570,000 units, to continue into 2011.

We saw a 33% growth in sales from January to September this year. If this momentum can be maintained or improved next year, it would be good, he said.

Hafiz said this after the company launched the new Naza Kia Sorento sport-utility vehicle (SUV) at the opening of Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS) 2010 yesterday.

The Malaysian Automotive Association has forecast TIV for 2010 to hit 570,000, its highest ever since reaching 552,316 units in 2005.

Hafiz said Naza Kia was targeting to grow its market share to 3% next year from 2% currently. We are a niche player in the market, he said, adding that it aimed to sell 100 to 150 units of the Sorento every month.

Hafiz said the company had received 251 bookings for the SUV, which would cost below RM160,000.

Currently, Naza Kia’s best-seller is the Forte sedan, which accounts for 55% of its total sales.

Hafiz said the company was on track to meet its target of selling 11,000 vehicles this year.

He said it would launch five new models in the next eight months to boost sales.

Besides the new Sorento, Naza Kia also displayed the latest Kia Optima, Forte Koup and Cadenza at KLIMS 2010, which will run till Dec 12.

Meanwhile, Nasim Sdn Bhd, which is also a member of the Naza group and distributor of Peugeot cars in Malaysia, aims to sell 1,200 units of its newly launched 5008 multi-purpose vehicle (MPV).

Nasim chief operating officer Samson George said the company had received 10 bookings for the vehicle. The 5008 costs RM159,888.

Naza joint group executive chairman SM Nasarudin SM Nasimuddin said the company was targeting to sell 3,000 Peugeot vehicles this year. It initially aimed to sell 3,500 units.

This is because we have undelivered orders for 1,000 units, so (in actuality) we have already surpassed our target for this year.

We’ve had supply issues with certain models that have been a hit in other countries, he said.

Nasarudin said Nasim aimed to sell 6,700 Peugeot vehicles next year.

More than 300,000 visitors are expected to visit the show and car buyers will also get special bank interest rates and gifts for cars bought during the period, she added.

Star Publications group general manager (Business – Print and New Media) Calvin Kan said the management was honoured to be appointmented official media for the seventh instalment of the largest and most authoritative motor show in Malaysia.

He said Star Publications would provide extensive exposure on event updates, in print, online and radio stations.

The Star‘s circulation is 300,000 while its readership is a million, he said.

“Our New Media division, comprising The Star Online and a host of niche portals, are also fast expanding,” he said.

KLIMS ’10 will be held from Dec 3 to 12 at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

New COO to boost Naza Kia business

To boost Naza Kia’s automotive business, its newly appointed chief operating officer Datuk Syed Abdul Hafiz Syed Abu Bakar hopes to leverage on the group’s strong global reputation.

“Kia Motors, South Korea’s second largest automobile manufacturer, has a very strong presence globally, including Europe and the United States,” he told Bernama today.

“I hope to leverage on its strength and then cascade back in Malaysia,” he said.

Naza Kia, the official distributor of Kia Motor vehicles in Malaysia, earlier announced that it had appointed Syed Hafiz, former managing director of Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sdn Bhd (Perodua), as its new chief operating officer.

Syed Hafiz, who spent five years at Perodua, will assume his position at Naza Kia on Oct 1, 2010, replacing Datuk Syed Hisham Syed Wazir who left the company end-August to join UMW Holdings Bhd as its president and chief executive officer.

Syed Hafiz said that based on the group’s strength, he would also focus on enhancing Naza Kia’s image, adding value to the business and making its products desirable to customers.

After leaving Perodua, Syed Hafiz spent nine months working with a non-governmental organisation (NGO) and he intends to continue with it.

His interest in making a comeback to the automotive industry came after his visit to South Korea in his capacity as adviser to the Malaysian-Korean Chamber of Commerce.

He also followed a trade mission there led by International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed recently.

“As I walk around and see the automotive industry there, it inspired me to make a comeback and improve the industry,” he said.

“We believe Datuk Syed Hafiz is the best person to carry on where Datuk Syed Hisham left off,” said SM Nasarudin SM Nasimuddin, joint group executive chairman of the Naza group of companies, in a statement announcing the appointment.

“Syed Hafiz brings with him a vast wealth of experience and hands-on knowledge that will bring the Kia brand to the next level in Malaysia,” he said.

Syed Hafiz retired from his position at Perodua end-2009 after five years with the national carmaker. Prior to joining Perodua, Syed Hafiz spent 10 years in various capacities at the UMW group.

During his tenure, Syed Hafiz led Perodua to new heights, including becoming the country’s best-selling brand, a position which it still holds till today.

KEEN to move up in the world and leave behind the ‘value’ market where cars are sold almost exclusively on price, Korean carmaker Kia is doing everything it can to make a quantum leap in terms of brand image and product quality.

The Forte is the first car that is designed and engineered to meet the new goals and from the  few hours that we had to gain a first impression, it has yet to put a foot wrong. The new chiselled good looks come courtesy of Kia’s new chief designer, Peter Schreyer who is injecting a level of European sophistication and charm that was not seen in any cars from Seoul. Since most of us form our first impression of a person or a product from external appearance, the Forte would score well, thanks to its welljudged proportions, neat lines, bold surface play and crisp detailing.

The key element of the current Kia design language is the new corporate grille which, according to Schreyer,
is inspired by the jaws of a roaring tiger. Whatever large animal inspired it, one thing for sure, it is a distinctive and strong visual identity for the car.

The designers paid a lot of attention to the overall stance of the Forte, the wide front track and aggressive front
fender blister gives it visual stability.

Apart from creating a wide stance, the fender blister also helps to create the impres-sion that the bonnet sits lower than it actually is.

Overall design is quite conservative but the use of well-developed proportions, the overall wedge shape and
wheel-at-each-corner layout all work together seamlessly.  The large calm surfaces and confident lines give an impression of quality that has never presented itself in previous offerings from the company and buyers will be happy to note that the interior has benefitted from a similar improvement. Naza-Kia Sdn Bhd, the local
assembler and distributor of Kia cars are keen to point out that the Forte lands at the top of the class in many aspects, including cabin space, specifi cations and also performance and handling.

While the numbers and specifi cations are impressive, the Forte does more than that; it actually offers visible
and tactile improvements in nearly all aspects.

The overall black interior creates a sporty impression of the cabin, which will appeal to male buyers and those
who want to project an aggressive image.

From the driver’s seat, the dashboard looks well thought-out with all major dials and controls within easy reach and logically laid out.

Kia has chosen soft-touch plastic as the surface for much of the dashboard which creates an impression of both quality and luxury. Metal fi nish adds sparkle to the neat design and provides the right level of embellishment to keep the eye attracted.

The three-barrel design of the main instrument cluster fi ts in with the current trend in cabin design, combined
with the unique red mood lighting and orange needles pointing to bold white numbers as indents lift the driving
ambience of this family sedan.

Fabric quality is also impressive and completes the cabin. In terms of specifi cation, the Forte will come in three levels — the 1.6EX, 1.6SX and 2.0SX. Even at the most basic trim level, the new model brings so much to the table, offering anti-lock brakes, twin airbags and a modern engine. Choose the SX trim and you get push-button start, keyless entry system, 17-inch alloy wheels, electronic stability programme, six-CD in-dash
changer, iPod and MP3 interface, sporty chrome exhaust tip, automatic climate control and electronic stability programme.

Alternatively, if you have a big enough budget, you can go for the 2.0 SX. It comes with  six airbags and electronic power steering, which makes for a really enticing option. With such an impressive equipment list, one may worry about the price but Naza-Kia is one company that knows how to give value for money to its customers so the 1.6EX has a price tag of RM75,800. Move up one trim level and the car will cost you RM81,800, and if you decide to take home the top-of-theline 2.0SX, the dealer will want RM93,800 for it.
Considering that the Forte is comparable to the Honda Civic and Toyota Altis in terms of size, the price sits
at least one class lower, well within the Honda City/Toyota Vios category.

If you can get past the badge, the Forte is certainly one car that can make discerning buyers happy. Drivers would also appreciate the effort which has gone into the Forte’s chassis. It is well-sorted and offers wonderful
balance between ride and handling.

Along the tight and twisty roads in Balik Pulau, Penang, the Forte tracked the snaking tarmac faithfully and without much complaint. It is hard to get the car out of shape because the ESP steps in early enough to mitigate driver error.

Packaged with good looks,  modern technology, emphasis on safety and quality, the Forte is a formidable challenger in the C-segment family sedan market and certainly deserves serious consideration from anyone
looking for a family car under RM100,000.

In fact even those looking for cars just above the RM100,000 mark would do well to inspect the Forte closely.
